When a loved one is caught up in a
lie, maybe many lies, it can be very difficult to learn to
trust that person again.
People lie for many reasons but one of the biggest ones is
that they believe that in the short run, their lives will be
filled with more pain or they will cause more pain if they
tell the truth. So they lie to save themselves or others
pain--in the short run. It
usually ends up that the pain of the lie is far greater than
if they had been truthful but in the moment, especially if
lying has been a habit since childhood, a lie just seems
easier. Some people lie
because they don't trust that the other person will honor
what's real and truthful for them.
Some people lie because lying is how
they figured out how to get what they wanted in
childhood--and now it's a habit.
Some people are simply pathological
liars and nothing you do could change them.
Whatever the reason, if you are with a
person who lies, you need to get to the bottom of why he or
she does it and then work together to resolve and heal.
Should you put up with lies?
Of course not. But there usually is a
reason and a person can stop lying if he or she has help and
has the desire to stop.
If you want to find out the truth,
here's a sure-fire way to do it...
